Various issues on Tailscale Exit Nodes

Hello everyone,

I've used Tailscale on and off for some time, though mostly off as I've been working on VPS's where I install Pi-hole and PiVPN, along with Wireguard.

This way has been fine for me for a long time but some friends keep telling me to get on tailscale as that will solve all my issues.

Now if I can explain, I have about 3 VPN endpoints with the whole pihole and pivpn set up. I use dnsmasq and point some domains, or quite a lot of specific streaming service domains at ControlD while the server upstream will be Cloudflare.

Over the time and with growing ControlD integrations, I've got servers from places where ControlD may not have them. These servers have been set up with miniproxy running in a docker container.

Anyway, get to this morning and I set up Tailscale across 9 different VPS. All with mixed results. For the most part, the servers will function, with each one being confirmed to be an exit node.

I understand at this point, my three VPN endpoints are not doing as they do via pivpn with wireguard and using the pihole and dnsmasq but that's fine to this point.

I'm using MagicDNS and most servers are either Debian or Ubuntu anyway. One in particular wasn't able to function on apple tv or any other device when using as exit node. It couldn't find server. I messed about with changing from MagicDNS to Cloudflare and local DNS. Eventually that started working. I think ipv6 being disabled on the box played a part there in it not working.

I have other machines without ipv6 too that have no issues but this one seems to. It is server located in Egypt if that helps.

While on a UK server with Wireguard I can get normal speeds on a speedtest at home, around 90Mbps to 140Mbps. It fluctuates.

But on tailscale I can hit barely 25Mbps so it takes quite a hit and unsure why. It is a Fasthosts/IONOS server if that makes a difference.

Any ideas for the poor speeds? Also any ideas why no internet when using Egypt server as an exit node? There is only miniproxy and tailscale on the Egyptian server by the way.
