So, Where Do You Start?

You're ready to start your LLC. You know you're also going to need a domain to start curating your digital presence. But which should you start FIRST?

Six of one, half dozen of the other. Both are a matter of name availability. Let's walk you through it.

Securing Your LLC First

First, make sure your business name is available. A quick, free business name search can spare you the frustration of having your LLC filing rejected thanks to a non-unique name.

(Trust us, there's nothing worse than being so confident in your LLC name, ordering 1,000 business cards with "Jamie's Puppy Cafe" and then coming to find out there are already 14 other identical businesses in your state.)

Knowing the general rules for what names can be accepted will save you time, too:

• Most states restrict certain words to prevent confusion or protect regulated industries. "Bank," "Insurance Agency," "Federal" tend to be among them, along with words that imply you're a licensed professional.
• Most states also require that your business name not mislead people into thinking you're something you aren't. That includes using a correct entity identifier (like "LLC," "limited liability company," etc. and not "Inc" or "Incorporated"), but it also means that you can't pretend to be, say, a government agency.
• Plenty of states restrict obscenities. (Getting punnier helps. Source: every crab shack name ever.)

You'll also want to check that the name you want doesn't violate any registered trademarks, and do a quick search online for social media profiles and other sites that may show up. If no exact matches for the name come up, check to see whether the domain name you want is available. If it is, nab it quick (before someone else does)!
