Hi everyone,
I recently took over a business and now have access to the existing GoDaddy account and business email.
The domain is currently active and renewed until 2027, and the website is already live and working properly.
However, when we logged into GoDaddy to access the website, hosting, and domain dashboard, we were presented with a setup screen that says:
“How do you want to start? We’ll help you get set up in just a few steps.”
It gives us two options:
– Create a new WordPress site
– Import an existing WordPress site
This is where we're concerned. The website and domain are already live, so we don't want to accidentally overwrite, disconnect, transfer, or delete anything.
Our questions are:
-
Why are we seeing this setup screen if the website is already hosted and live?
-
Is choosing “Import an existing WordPress site” actually the correct step?
-
Could this affect the current live website, domain, DNS settings, or cause downtime?
-
What is the safest way to manage or transfer the existing hosting and domain without losing any files, data, email, or DNS records?
-
Should we avoid clicking anything until the existing hosting and domain setup is confirmed?
-
Do we need to transfer the domain separately, or is it already under the correct GoDaddy account?
We want to make sure we handle the business transition correctly and do not make any changes that could affect the live website, domain, email, or DNS settings.
If anyone has experience transferring an existing GoDaddy WordPress site and domain to a new account, I’d really appreciate some guidance on the safest process.
Thank you!
