I ignored MCP for months. Every explainer was some version of "it connects AI to your data", which told me nothing about why I'd bother. What made it click was running three tasks I already do by hand and watching where the time went.
Note: I work at SE Ranking and the examples below use our MCP, because that's the setup I actually use. The tool isn't the point – swap in whatever you already pay for, the logic is the same.
1. Content brief from one objective
Normally an afternoon: domain overview, competitors, keyword gap, SERP check, what the top 3 articles miss, internal links, then writing it up. One prompt describing the end result, ~10 minutes of it working. It saved each research step to its own file, so it never lost the thread halfway through the way chat does.
The brief still needs your judgment – what it removes is the research layer, not the thinking.
2. AI search visibility comparison
Pick a brand and four competitors, pull how often each gets mentioned across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, AI Overviews, then cluster the prompts by topic to see who owns which conversation. Doing this manually means scraping AI answers and categorizing them by hand, which is a full day of someone's life.
Useful bit: link mentions and brand mentions are separate signals, and which gap you have changes what you'd actually do about it.
3. Backlink script + a deck
This one surprised me. It read the MCP to find the right endpoint itself, wrote a Python script, ran it, then built a PowerPoint off the output. I named zero endpoints and zero parameters. You end up with something reusable – swap the domain, rerun.
The pattern across all three: describe the outcome, not the steps. If your prompt names API parameters you're doing its job for it. Setup was maybe 10 minutes.
TL;DR: if MCP still sounds abstract, stop reading explainers and run one task you already do manually. Start with:
give me an overview of this domain
Everything else makes more sense after.
