Tips for new medicos. MUST READ THIS. Part – 3.1

Disclaimer – I don't support piracy. If you are broke now, pirate the stuff and pay when you are earning.

With that out of the way let's get going with the 3rd part. I have divided it into two parts as it was getting a bit longer.

I have divided part 3 into part 3.1 and 3.2.

Part 3 has tips, tricks, websites and apps which will make you internet savvy.

Internet is a powerful tool. Despite having cheap unlimited data, the internet literacy among Indians is not good. People don't know what they can get from internet. As medico, you must be resourceful and know your way around the internet; especially in this age of AI. I have literally seen some PG seniors who don't even know how to use PowerPoint or how to navigate a website to download something. Please don't be like those guys.

Some Safeguards

  1. Don't give your personal information anywhere on the internet, especially on shady ad filled websites. If a shady site asks for mobile number – Google phone number generator. If a shady site asks for your email ID – Google 10minutemail / 20minutemail. If the site wants your address – Google fake address generator. Your personal info is more important than you realize. Use fake name when required. Don't upload your pics to a random website or chatting platform. (Instagram is a different story. Keep you profile private; if you are a influencer then it's a different story. Don't accept stranger messages and don't give your info unless a basic level of trust is achieved – especially girls; you will get a lot of random requests from seniors)
  2. Don't give your card/UPI information on less known websites. If you want to order something from a website which you have never heard of, use cash on delivery.
  3. Don't save your card information in browsers on a laptop/tab/phone. Browsers can easily be hacked and your card information can easily get leaked.
  4. Ditch Chrome. Use Firefox + uBlock Origin extension on every device or Brave. This arrangement will block almost all the ads and will give you a clean, tracking-less internet. If you are a moderate to advanced user, set up NextDNS. It gives ad blocking on almost all devices with granular control, and you can easily see logs of which website it has blocked.
  5. If you're planning to use your college Wi-Fi, or you are visiting a very shady website, please use a VPN. I personally use Proton VPN. It is fast, secure, and ad-free. It requires a proton mail ID to use and the free version connects you to random countries though (install modded version on Android to unlock this paid feature – in part 3.2).
  6. Use the biometric fingerprint/face ID app lock on your private and sensitive apps (banking, UPI, WhatsApp, Instagram, gallery, email, messages etc)Try to use the inbuilt biometric lock which the app provides, especially for banking, UPI, and WhatsApp. For other apps use your phone's inbuilt app locker, which is available on every Android and iOS device (except on Samsung. On Samsung it's available on One UI 9). You can also use Amarok, a free open source alternative. You never know who will snoop around your devices in college.
  7. Enable your device "Find my device" in case it gets stolen or lost. Use e-sim if your device supports it because if your device gets lost or stolen, the sim cannot be taken out and it remains active so you can easily track it down.

Emails

  1. Make at least 4 email IDs – 1st for your personal use (shopping, websites, photo & phone backup, academic websites etc). 2nd for government work and banking (official government forms, bank, stocks, finance related etc). 3rd for professional use with a "Dr" in the email ID (for LinkedIn, job hunting, medical license registration, research, patient interaction etc). This will remain with you for your whole life and define your professional career. 4rth email ID should be from other provider (Outlook, Proton etc. I use Proton as same email is used for Proton VPN) to act as your recovery email. Do not share this with any one and keep it for personal use. A 5th email ID can also be made if required for a specific need, such as gaming or GitHub projects, etc.
  2. Secure your email IDs with two-factor authentication (fingerprint/faceID) and an authenticator app. This will make your email ID to be less hackable.
  3. Do not randomly sign in with your email IDs on any device other than your personal devices. If it's an emergency and you absolutely need to sign in, make sure you're signing out afterwards and deleting your account/email ID from that browser history and sign-in options.

Others

  1. Unidays – It gives you a student discount on major brands. Just verify your student status with your student email ID given by your college or your ID card. For the list of all the companies it gives a discount on, download it's app.
  2. Learn moderate level of how to use PowerPoint and Word.
  3. To download document or slides from scribd and SlideShare without making a account; Google "Scribd/SlideShare download online". The 1st or 2nd website usually work. Don't go talking screenshot of the document, it actually degrades in quality and is non editable. Just download them.

This is part 3.1

Due to multiple links, reddit was deleting part 3.2. Here is Part 3.2
