If you’re preparing for your first technical interview, don’t spend all your time solving harder and harder DSA problems.
For most fresher interviews, you need to be ready for four things: DSA, CS fundamentals, your projects, and explaining your thinking clearly.
1. Get interview-level DSA solid
You don’t need 500 random LeetCode problems.
Be comfortable with the basics of:
- Arrays, strings and hashing
- Two pointers and sliding window
- Binary search
- Stacks and queues
- Linked lists
- Trees, BFS and DFS
- Heaps
- Basic graphs and DP
More importantly, practise going from brute force → optimisation → code → complexity out loud.
Getting the right answer silently is different from interviewing well.
2. Revise CS fundamentals selectively
For fresher SDE interviews, I’d prioritise:
OOP: inheritance, polymorphism, abstraction, interfaces
DBMS: joins, normalisation, indexing, transactions
OS: processes vs threads, deadlocks, scheduling, memory
CN: HTTP/HTTPS, TCP vs UDP, DNS, basic networking
Don’t memorise textbook paragraphs. Be able to explain each concept in your own words and answer one or two follow-up questions.
3. Know your projects ridiculously well
Anything on your resume is fair game. For every major project, prepare:
- What problem does it solve?
- Why did you choose this stack?
- How does the architecture work?
- What was the hardest technical issue?
- What would you improve with more time?
If you used an API, database, framework or library, understand what it actually does. “I followed a tutorial” becomes obvious pretty quickly.
4. Practise speaking, not just studying
Take a question and explain your approach before writing code.
If stuck, communicate what you’re considering instead of going completely silent. Interviewers can evaluate a partially correct thought process; they can’t evaluate thoughts you never say.
TL;DR
For fresher technical interviews:
DSA + CS fundamentals + deep project knowledge + communication.
Spend less time collecting resources and more time practising the actual interview loop: understand → explain → solve → analyse → handle follow-ups.
That gap between “I know this” and “I can explain this under pressure” is where a lot of otherwise prepared freshers get stuck.
