Power to the people. A stronger TSR. Let's make elections fun again.
The Spinner Party believes in one fundamental principle:
TheSpinRoom belongs to the people who make it.
TSR is more than a subreddit. It is a community, a political simulation, and a living institution built by its members. Its LARP exists separately from real-world political discussion, but the two inevitably intersect: the same people participate in the community and its political institutions, while moderators serve not only as TSR's executives but, through elections, as legislators within its political system.
That unique structure demands a unique form of democracy.
Our first manifesto was about giving the people a greater voice. Our Second Manifesto is about making that voice consistent and making TSR's politics something people actually want to participate in.
This is A New Deal for TSR.
I. THE PEOPLE OF TSR
Our name says what we stand for.
The Spinner Party stands for the people of TheSpinRoom.
The subreddit is not the personal domain of its moderators, political parties, or any other group of insiders. Its institutions exist to serve the community that created them.
Significant changes to the community should receive meaningful input from the people affected by them.
We supported Prop 9 because we believe fundamental changes should not simply be decided by a handful of people behind the scenes. Whatever one's opinion of the substance, the principle is more important:
The people deserve a say.
The people of TSR are posters, commenters, moderators, LARPers, political participants, observers, newcomers, and regulars.
All of them are TSR.
And our politics should belong to all of them too.
II. A MORE LEGITIMATE MANDATE
A democracy is more than holding an election occasionally.
When elections are rare or dominated by a small group of highly engaged users, political power naturally becomes concentrated.
The Spinner Party supports:
- Shorter terms of office
- More frequent elections
- Easier voting
- Higher voter turnout
- Greater participation in community decisions
Shorter terms create accountability. More frequent elections create responsiveness. Easier voting creates participation. Higher turnout creates legitimacy.
If the people are sovereign, they should have frequent opportunities to exercise that sovereignty.
And because TSR's political institutions exist within the community itself, our politics should remain connected to the people who make that community possible.
III. MAKING VOTING EASIER
Saying we want higher turnout means nothing if we don't say how.
The Spinner Party will put forward legislation requiring the Elections Secretary to publish election dates and deadlines alongside the declaration of an election, giving voters adequate notice and making the electoral calendar predictable.
The ElSec we have now, OneCom, may be doing this already, but we should not rely on someone's good will going forward.
No surprise elections. No guessing when voting starts.
The people should know when they will be asked to choose their representatives.
LET'S MAKE ELECTIONS FUN AGAIN
Elections shouldn't feel like an administrative chore. They're one of the best opportunities for the wider TSR community to engage with the LARP.
We want to encourage non-candidates to participate too: discuss the issues, follow the campaigns, debate the candidates, make predictions, argue about the results, or just enjoy the chaos.
Because politics isn't supposed to be a chore.
Politics is supposed to be fun.
Let's make TSR's politics fun again.
IV. TWO HALVES, ONE TSR
The political LARP of TSR is not real-world politics.
It has its own institutions, traditions, personalities, conflicts, and culture. We believe that distinction should be preserved and built upon.
The goal is not to make TSR more like real-world politics.
The goal is to make TSR more like TSR.
The LARP is a political system built by members of this community. Its institutions are part of the culture we've created together. And because moderators are both community executives and elected LARP legislators, the two sides of TSR will inevitably intersect.
That does not mean one should consume the other.
A member who cares deeply about the LARP and a member who's here primarily for real-world political discussion are both fully part of TSR.
We don't think the LARP is a distraction from the real discussion.
We don't think the real discussion is an intrusion on the LARP.
They're both TSR.
V. WHY THE NEW DEAL?
The First Spinner Party Manifesto was born from a simple frustration: too much power was concentrated in too few hands.
The Second Manifesto is our answer.
We do not simply want to criticize the people currently in power. We want to change the structures that allow power to become unnecessarily concentrated in the first place.
We want a TSR where:
- Terms are shorter.
- Elections are more frequent.
- Voting is easier.
- Turnout is higher.
- Public opinion is measured.
- Members have more opportunities to participate.
- The LARP develops its own traditions.
- Both halves of TSR can coexist without either being treated as the "real" one.
- And participating in TSR's politics is actually fun.
A stronger democracy makes a stronger community.
A stronger community makes a stronger LARP.
And a more vibrant political culture gives people a reason to participate.
A NEW DEAL FOR THE SPINROOM
The Spinner Party believes TSR's political system should reflect the community it serves.
We believe the LARP should remain distinct from real-world politics while developing a political identity of its own.
We believe moderators, as both community executives and elected legislators, should remain accountable to the people they represent.
We believe elections should be frequent.
We believe voting should be accessible.
We believe public policy should be informed by public opinion.
We believe the LARP should have traditions of its own.
And we believe politics should be something people actually want to participate in.
The First Manifesto called for power to the people.
The Second Manifesto sets out how we intend to give them more of it.
This is A New Deal.
For TSR. For its people. For a politics of our own.
