Where domain hunters compare notes

I sold 5 websites to local buissnesses by cold calling. heres how i found them

I do web design freelance. Instead of waiting for leads I went looking for businesses that have no website at all — not a bad website, none.

There are more than you'd think. In one town near me there are 86 businesses with no site, and 54 of those have a phone number listed. Restaurants, nail salons, barbers, dog groomers. Most of them have an Instagram they post to and nowhere to send anyone.

The pitch is easy because you're not competing with their current site. There isn't one. I call, say I noticed they don't have a website, and ask if they've thought about it. Some say no. Five said yes.

Two things I got wrong at first:

  1. "No website" from map data is a lie about 3% of the time. I called a shop to offer them a site and they told me they already had one — it just wasn't listed in the mapping data. Nothing kills a cold call faster. I now check every business against the live web before calling: search for a domain built from their name and see if their own phone number is on the page.

  2. It's not passive. You are calling strangers. Anyone selling you "automated client acquisition" is selling you something that doesn't work.

Extra Notes:

with this tool i sold 5 sites in two weeks each site took me about 1-2 hours to sell.

I built the finder into a tool because I got tired of doing it in a spreadsheet. There's a free version that'll count the businesses with no site in any town — no signup, just type a town name: unwebbed.app

Happy to answer anything about the calling part, which is the bit that actually matters.
