Hello! First of all, I'm not sure if this is an issue related to Tailscale, AdGuard, or Android itself so sorry in advance if the post is not related to the sub. I'll crosspost it just in case.
I'm setting up my private DNS via AdGuard on a home server for an Android phone (Samsung) and I don't know what I'm doing wrong (I don't really use Android so maybe it's an issue with that):
Configuration
- For my home WiFi, I added a static IP address for the phone and used the local IP address (192.168…) of my home server with AdGuard as my primary DNS. Just in case, for my second one I use a NextDNS one I also use from time to time (its IP4 option).
- On Network > More options > Private DNS, I set up the private DNS via NextDNS (that XXX.dns.nextdns.io url) that I’ll set on and off (I won’t use ‘default’ as I assume it uses Google’s DNS) for the following tests. I cannot use the IP4 direction of Tailscale (100.whatever…) here as it does not allow me to save it.
___
Private DNS on + Tailscale off
- ✅ WiFi: It works, queries both on AdGuard and Next DNS for some reason?
- ✅ Data: Everything works, queries only on NextDNS as expected.
Private DNS off + Tailscale off
- ❓WiFi: Somehow adds appear on Google news, but queries do appear on AdGuard as blocked (telemetry I guess).
- ❓Data: Same as with WiFi.
Private DNS on + Tailscale on
- ❌WiFi and Data: Cannot access DNS provider
Private DNS off + Tailscale on
- ✅WiFi: It works somehow, queries on AdGuard only and no ads.
- ❌Data: Does not work, ads appear
I’m going insane. Can anyone help me make sense of any of this? Thanks a lot!
