I've been building a small productivity app by myself for the past several months and I'm getting close to releasing it.
The app will be completely free at launch. No subscriptions, ads, or in-app purchases. I'm not raising money either. It's basically a side project that I'd like to grow if people actually use it.
So far my costs are pretty small. Mostly the app store developer account, hosting, and a domain.
What I'm unsure about is the legal side.
Right now everything is under my personal name. Do solo developers normally form an LLC before putting an app in the app store, even when the app isn't making any money?
Part of me thinks I should wait until there's actual revenue. The other part worries that once strangers are downloading and using something I built, there could be risks that have nothing to do with making money.
Would you form the LLC before launch or wait until the app shows some traction? What would actually make you decide it was time?
