Saw a video about outbid.lol, a "pay to be #1" leaderboard that made $52k in 30 hours, and decided to build my own take on the mechanic in one sitting, mostly to see how far Claude Code could get solo.
El Podio (elpodio.lol): pay more than whoever's currently #1 (or anywhere in the top 10) and you take their spot. Get outbid and you fall.
Since people keep asking "isn't this just the same site," here's what's actually different:
– Ties share a rank instead of forcing everyone to a strictly higher unique price. Match the current price exactly and you split the spot instead of losing out on a technicality
– Getting knocked out of the Top 10 gives you a 2h window to buy back in at the current price instead of starting completely over
– The list isn't capped at 10, Top 10 / Top 50 / Top 100 tiers, so a $1 entry still gets a real spot instead of being locked out entirely
– Every position expires after 48h by design, so it can't turn into a permanent graveyard of old names
Build-wise: Astro frontend, Cloudflare Pages Functions backend, D1 (SQLite), Stripe Checkout with dynamic price_data, no pre-created products, no Connect account since it's not a marketplace. Hit a real production bug switching to live payments, an invalid Stripe API version string was silently killing checkout, and Cloudflare's own generic error page masked it until I found the right way to tail deployment logs.
Posted about it across a few dev/indie subreddits over the past day and it's already pulling decent traffic from multiple angles, a few thousand views combined. Real paid entries are still trickling in slowly though, it's a genuinely new domain with zero backlinks. Curious what people think of the mechanic itself, or if anyone's tried something this monetization-first before.
