I’ve been bitten bad.
A little back story. Almost a year ago I released a zero knowledge firearms-related SaaS. It’s gone well and has some die hard fans, but the 2 questions i get most often are: what happens if you get hit by a bus; and how do i know the encryption is correctly implemented (closed source)
The answer to the first is, well you can technically export it, but X ceases as a usable service as soon as my wife stops paying supabase. The answer to the second questions is “trust me bro”.
But approaching the one year mark, I decided to look into offering a self hosted option. After lurking on here for a few days, i repurposed a ThinkPad x1 Carbon I haven’t used in a few years, threw proxmox. Long story short – it was easy to offer it as a self hosted service and i didn’t even have to fork the repo, just added some code shims at the boundaries and boom – up and running. Same codebase for me to maintain, no extra overhead.
But now I’m spiralling. Naturally, having lurked for a few days, I fired up the arr stack, plex, pi-hole, AdGuard, DNS service, reverse proxy. Damnit. Why couldn’t I have figured this out a year ago when RAM was still reasonable.
Anyway. Everything is still sitting on that thinkpad right now. But I’ve already ordered 3 x m920qs each with i7-8700T, 32GB ram and 1TB SSDs, 2 p330s with the same specs, a big ol 4 bay synology NAS, switch, router and a 10in 12U rack with all the 3D printed goodies to put all of this in. Some of those will get the pcie riser for 10gbe NICs.
Went ahead and bumped our ATT fiber from 1 gig to 5 too.
None of this is even here yet and my wife already hates me.
I’ll check back in when it all set up, if I’m still alive 😅
God speed!
