100,000
Once upon a time, an idea formed around one very simple thing: Bring together people who loved vertical Chinese dramas.
That was it.
Find the people who understood the obsession. Give them somewhere to talk about it. Somewhere to ask questions, find dramas, share discoveries, yell about endings, recognize a familiar face, and collectively lose their minds over fictional people making catastrophically bad decisions.
And somehow, from that simple idea, this happened.
One hundred thousand people.
That is no longer a cute little internet community. It’s a thriving place with personality, passion, and drama. What exists here today did not arrive fully formed.
It was built.
Piece by piece. Post by post. Answer by answer.
It was built by moderators and members, detectives and creators, post makers and collection builders, researchers, translators, jawbone finders, quiet helpers, and the occasional feral beast who could identify an actor from half an ear and a blurry screenshot.
I’d even make an argument that it was built by the commenter who just slapped an F under a post and expected something to happen! …. Okay… maybe that’s going TOO far 😉
People gave their time freely, gave their knowledge easily, and their creativity without thought. They stayed up late translating and writing and editing. They got up early to post and comment and meet with friends. They offered their ridiculous ability to remember the alternate title of a drama somebody watched eight months ago on an app they can no longer remember.
And together, they made something larger than any one person could have made alone.
Their work still exists here.
It exists in the traditions we kept. The systems we use. The archives we search and the posts we recognize. Speaking in a language we somehow all understand. The little pieces of culture that became so familiar we sometimes forget that, once upon a time, somebody had to create them.
I was given the task of writing our 100K tribute.
My usual job around here is making inappropriate observations about male leads’ bone structure. Apparently, this qualified me as a historian….
At first, I thought: Oh, this will be fun!! Some snark, some clichés, lay down some facts. Easy!
And then I started writing it. And rewriting it. And rewriting the rewrite.
Because the more I learned about the history of this place, the more I realized that I had been given an impossible assignment.
How do you fit years of people into one Reddit post?
How do you catalogue every person who stayed late, answered questions, cleaned queues, hunted links, identified actors, built collections, wrote articles, created traditions, solved problems, welcomed strangers, or quietly did the work nobody noticed needed doing?
You can’t.
And I especially can’t.
I wasn’t here for much of that history. When I arrived, the community already existed. It already had traditions and its own language.
Systems. Archives. Recurring posts. Creators. Detectives. People who seemed to know everything and people who would help without ever being asked twice.
I walked into something that was already alive.
Someone had built all of that.
Except someone is far too small a word. Dedicated people built it. Beautiful, passionate, stubborn, generous, wonderfully obsessive people built it.
Some of them are still here.
Some have moved on.
Some names no longer appear on a moderator list or beneath the posts we scroll past every day. But they do not simply vanish from something they helped create. They leave fingerprints and will always be loved and appreciated for what they contributed.
A tradition somebody started gets carried forward. A resource somebody made helps a stranger years later. A phrase becomes part of the community vocabulary.
A post inspires another post. Knowledge gets passed from one person to another until nobody quite remembers where it began.
Little pieces remain.
And those pieces matter.
Today, another collection of people keeps this enormous, ridiculous machine moving. Some have been here for years. Some arrived more recently. Some work where everyone can see them, creating posts and collections and conversations.
Others are buried somewhere behind the curtain, dealing with reports, systems, spam, queues and all the invisible machinery required to keep a community this large functioning.
They are adding their fingerprints too. And someday, the people who come after us will inherit pieces of what they built. That is how communities survive.
And then there is you.
The hundred thousand people who made all that work mean something.
We’re strangers on the internet.
Usernames.
Tiny pictures.
Anonymous opinions floating through an absurd amount of unseen data. We live in different countries. Speak different languages. Come from different backgrounds. We will probably never know most of one another’s real names.
And somehow, we found each other anyway.
Because somebody posted a drama.
Somebody answered.
Somebody asked for a title.
Somebody recognized an actor.
Somebody recommended the perfect show at exactly the right moment.
Somebody warned us that the ending would destroy us.
And we came back the next day, and the next, and the day after that.
So 100K belongs to everyone who was here at the beginning, building something without knowing how enormous it might someday become.
It belongs to every moderator and contributor who carried part of that work through the years and left something behind for the people who followed.
It belongs to the people carrying it now, still trying to make this little corner of the internet worth returning to.
And it belongs to every single person who comes here to search, post, answer, recommend, translate, create, lurk, laugh, argue, help, thirst, scream about spoilers and occasionally identify an entire drama from one exposed jawbone.
One hundred thousand does not belong to one person.
It belongs to all of us.
The world outside this little corner of Reddit can be loud. It can be angry and exhausting and relentlessly hard. But here, somehow, a group of strangers found one another through these stories.
And then we stayed.
We made friends and traditions. We made memories. We all built something.
Maybe that is the real milestone. Not the number beside the subreddit name.
But the fact that one hundred thousand people found a reason to gather in the same little corner of an enormous internet and say:
You love this too?
Yeah.
So do I.
To everyone who built this place.
To everyone who carried it.
To everyone who left a piece of themselves behind.
To everyone here now.
And to whatever collection of drama-addicted lunatics comes next:
Happy 100K.
This belongs to you.
