Disclosure: I work at Ingest Labs, which builds server-side tracking. This post is vendor-neutral. The checks apply whichever tool you use, and switching tools won't fix most of these causes.
The symptom: Google Ads conversions drop while clicks, sessions and Shopify orders stay flat. Orders with a Google UTM show no gclid, so an "Import from clicks" conversion action has nothing to match them against.
The useful question is where the click ID gets lost. Work through it in this order:
- Is it missing, or is it a different ID?
Google's API docs describe gbraid as the identifier for iOS app conversions and wbraid for iOS web conversions, and an upload takes exactly one of gclid, gbraid or wbraid. If your missing-gclid orders skew iPhone and iPad, check whether those parameters are being captured and sent. A gclid-only check makes this look like total loss.
- Does it survive the landing page?
Open an ad's final URL with ?gclid=test123, let every redirect resolve, and look at the address bar on the page that finally loads. Geo or language redirects, multi-store setups, vanity domains and CDN rules that normalise URLs are the usual culprits. Test each country storefront separately.
- Is consent stopping it being stored?
When ad_storage is denied, the click ID isn't written to a first-party advertising cookie, so it's gone by checkout unless something else carries it. Google's URL passthrough can append click parameters to same-domain links for exactly this case. Compare consent rates before and after the drop, and look for any CMP or default-consent change around that date.
- Does it reach the order?
Many Shopify setups write the ID to cart attributes. Attributes whose names start with a double underscore are private: hidden at checkout, but visible on the order in the admin, so they're easy to audit. Theme updates, a new cart drawer, accelerated checkout buttons that skip the cart page, and app conflicts can all break this handoff silently. Place a test order through every checkout path you offer.
- Was it sent but not matched?
Google Ads' offline data diagnostics shows data quality and alerts for errored imports. Compare daily uploads with Google-attributed Shopify orders. A gap there points to delivery. A gap between uploads and reported conversions points to matching.
Two things that make this less fragile:
– Send hashed email and phone with purchases (enhanced conversions), so Google has a second way to match when the click ID is missing.
– Track two numbers daily, per storefront: click-ID fill rate on Google-UTM orders, and Google Ads conversions as a ratio of Shopify's Google-attributed orders. A sudden step in either one tells you within days, not weeks.

What's the strangest cause of lost click IDs you've traced? Redirects and express checkout catch the most people in our experience, but I'd like to hear the ones that took longest to find.
