“Could not connect to the server message” on iOS – potential fix

Holy cow posting this here bc it took me too long to resolve but if you are trying to connect to your Jellyfin server from your iOS, and it’s not connecting, even with Tailscale try this.

Place the numbers from Tailscale, Network, DNS tab, the numbers in the field underneath the “magicDNS” text box ex: “000.000.000.000”

Into the Jellyfin, Networking, Server address Settings, known proxies field

Click the save button at the bottom of the network page on Jellyfin,

Oh yeah btw make sure you’ve set up Tailscale on iOS before hand

Then on your iOS, open the Jellyfin app or on a web browser type in “ http://(machine name on Tailscale that you are hosting from):8096 “

Also make sure

In Jellyfin that you have checked the box to “allow remote connections to this server”

And that the “remote IP address filter” is blank, and set to “whitelist”

Also turning off data while doing this on iPhone can help, if using the same local network.

Hope this can help someone, I’ve tried messing with the firewall settings, and trying every combination of ip address, http://, and :8096 before finding the solution.
