Hi everyone, I run a Japanese learning website, and many learners ask me if they can start their own. The answer is yes, and it’s not so difficult. These are the basics I share:
What you actually need
- A domain name. Short, easy to spell, and with a keyword like “Japanese” if possible.
- Web hosting. A normal WordPress plan is enough for a new blog. You don’t need an expensive server at the beginning.
- WordPress. It’s free, and you don’t need to code.
- Content. This is the real website. Hosting is only the box.
Where the money goes
The biggest cost is hosting. Domain is small, WordPress is free, a free theme is OK, and an email tool is free to start. Hosting is usually cheapest during sales, so timing matters.
Tips before you buy hosting
- Compare the first-year price and the renewal price. Sale prices often go up when you renew.
- Choose a plan for your size. A new blog doesn’t need the biggest one.
- Check what is included: SSL, backups, storage, and whether a domain is included.
Mistakes I see a lot
- Waiting for a “perfect” website instead of publishing first
- Writing without a topic plan (choose what learners really search for)
- Copying other people’s content instead of writing in your own words
- Hiding affiliate links (always be honest with your readers)
I wrote the full guide with the setup steps and a cost table, if anyone wants it: How to Start a Japanese Learning Website
Disclosure: that article contains an affiliate link to a hosting company. The tips above are the same either way.
Happy to answer questions about starting a site, or about learning Japanese. 🙂
