I've been putting together a budget friendly homelab in a 10-inch KWS 3D printed rack and thought I'd share the setup.
The build includes:
Virtualisation: Proxmox VE on a Ryzen 7 5700G
Storage: TrueNAS SCALE with 6 × 4TB drives in RAIDZ2
Networking: OPNsense firewall with 2 WAN failover and VLANs
Media: Jellyfin running on a Dell OptiPlex 3070
Self hosted services: Home Assistant, Pi-hole, Frigate, Zigbee2MQTT and Netdata
Backups and monitoring: Backblaze B2, UPS managed shutdowns and Telegram alerts
Estimated total spend so far is around £600–700 using a mix of existing and budget hardware.
It's still a work in progress, with a Coral USB accelerator, dedicated CCTV storage and further NAS expansion on the to-do list.
I'd love feedback on the hardware choices, power consumption, storage setup and anything you'd improve. What would you change next
