Codex CLI 0.163.0 adds searchable settings, immediate steering and stronger resume permissions

TL;DR

OpenAI released stable Codex CLI 0.163.0 on October 15. It adds a searchable settings screen, immediate follow-up steering, configurable leader-key shortcuts and managed-server restart controls. It also fixes permission restoration when resuming threads, hardens network-proxy checks and improves command completion and output handling.

What changed

  • Settings: open /config to search across preference categories, change supported settings and see which changes need a restart.
  • Steering and cancellation: follow-ups can steer Codex while it is responding. Interrupting a turn also stops active Code Mode cells and their nested tool calls.
  • Keyboard controls: /keymap supports a leader key, defaulting to Ctrl+X. Shortcut hints remain visible until you choose or cancel; voice mute moves to F9.
  • Background servers: /daemon can restart a managed server, warns about work the restart could interrupt and reconnects afterward.
  • Read-only work: Codex can run independent read-only tools in parallel, including skill, memory and conversation-history lookups.

Daybreak is also enabled by default for eligible accounts. The release says codex exec can select it with an OpenAI API key when the server offers access. This does not grant eligibility to every account.

Reliability and permission fixes

Resuming a saved thread now restores its permissions and network approvals while honoring explicit overrides and current managed policy. The network proxy checks authorization before DNS resolution, rejects duplicate Host headers and closes a credential-alias route around inspection hooks.

Other fixes route pending answers to the thread that requested them, improve Windows and WSL clipboard behavior, and address commands whose child processes keep output pipes open. Remote commands preserve late output for the final poll. An unrelated command should no longer make codex exec repeat the previous file diff.

Upgrade and practical implications

Choose the stable 0.163.0 release through your normal CLI installation method and confirm the installed version with codex --version. GitHub marks this release Latest; the separately listed 0.163.0-alpha builds remain prereleases.

The CLI now uses its standard shell executor and stops bundling a patched zsh. Configurations that use retired shell flags receive a migration notice, so check that notice when upgrading a customized setup.

Our interpretation: the resume and cancellation changes matter most for workflows that pause, return later or run nested tools. After upgrading, check a representative resume and interruption in your own environment before relying on those behaviors in unattended work. These are release-note claims; this post does not report an independent reproduction of the fixes.
