I got tired of monitors that show doubled numbers when a VPN is connected. They count the traffic once on your real adapter and again on the tunnel. So I built NetVitals, which measures them separately.
What it does:
- Totals for the hour, day, week, month and year, as charts and tables
- VPN traffic tracked on its own tab, never added to your direct traffic
- Live throughput graph plus a tray icon that reacts to activity
- Per-adapter and per-connection views, labelled by whether each connection went through the tunnel
- Reachability checks (Cloudflare, Google, GitHub) so you can tell whether the internet, DNS or just one provider is down. They use plain TCP, so no admin rights are needed
- A log of files landing in folders you choose
It's all local. There's no account, no cloud and no telemetry, just one database file on your machine. The only outbound request is an optional public-IP lookup, and you can turn it off.
One honest caveat: the Microsoft Store version can't show per-application usage, because that needs a kernel trace that requires admin rights and Store apps can't get them. The free desktop build on GitHub has it.
It's MIT licensed and I'm still improving it. I'd like to hear what's missing or broken, especially from people who run a VPN all day.
