What matters more than server specs when hosting a small website?

I’ve been spending some time trying different setups for a small website, and I’m starting to think that server specs aren’t really the hardest part to figure out.

Getting a site running is usually pretty straightforward. The part that takes more thought is everything around it, backups, SSL, DNS, updates, security, monitoring, and knowing what to do when something randomly stops working.

I used to think the main thing was finding a server with enough RAM and CPU, but I’m finding that having a setup that’s simple to maintain is probably just as important, especially when it’s a small project and you’re handling everything yourself.

What’s one thing you wish you had paid more attention to when you first started self-hosting?
