I have a temporary setup with a USW-Lite-8-PoE switch and an AC LR access point, hooked up to an OpenWRT router. The unifi devices are set up with management on a non-default VLAN, in case that matters. I was having a problem that the switch kept losing the set-inform setting, and would stop reporting to the network application.
I tried DHCP option 43, both on the default VLANs DHCP server, as well as on the management VLANs DHCP server, but the switch would never pick up the (DNS name) setting. So in the end I gave up and configured "unifi" as a CNAME to the network server's host, which works like a charm.
However, this seems to have resulted in both the switch and the AP totally ignoring the set-inform setting, rather than bootstrapping from the CNAME. When I ssh to the devices and issue the info command, they always report
Status: Connected (http://unifi:8080/inform)
This doesn't feel right to me, and I wonder what are the implications of ignoring the set-inform setting in favor of the DNS name. I guess if someone can inject a DNS name to your management VLAN you already have bigger problems?
Is this WAI, or am I holding this wrong somehow?
