Hi everyone! I'm fairly new to the home lab world and wanted to get some help.
I have a Debian 12 VM, which can access HTTPS but all outbound HTTP (port 80) connections time out.
The VM is fresh and has:
– VirtIO network adapter
– "vmbr0"
– VM IP: "192.168.1.71" (local)
– Gateway: "192.168.1.1"
– Network: "192.168.1.0/24"
The VM has normal LAN connectivity and HTTPS works fine, but outbound TCP port 80 seems to be blocked??
For example:
curl -4 -I https://deb.debian.org/debian/
works just fine
But:
curl -4 -I –connect-timeout 5 http://deb.debian.org/debian/
times out.
I've checked and it's not DNS because connecting directly to an IP on port 80 has the same problem.
I can connect to my router home page through HTTP though:
curl http://192.168.1.1
I've tested the same external HTTP connection from other machines on the same LAN:
– Windows PC → works
– Raspberry Pi → works
– Proxmox host → works
– Debian VM on Proxmox → times out
Things that I tried and some useful info:
– Disabled the VM's Proxmox firewall, didn't do anything
– Checked that the VM has the correct default route:
default via 192.168.1.1 … src 192.168.1.71
192.168.1.0/24"
– HTTPS/443 works from the VM, not HTTP
– Proxmox host itself can access HTTP normally
The original reason I noticed this is that a Docker build was failing at:
RUN apt-get update && apt-get install -y git
The base image ("denoland/deno") uses HTTP Debian repositories, so "apt-get update" couldn't reach them.
What would you check next to figure out why the HTTP seems to be broken? I wonder if I messed up the VM setup but I don't think so..
